This fall, five architectural studies majors served as undergraduate teaching assistants for Gretchen Bender’s foundations class for architectural studies majors (Approaches to the Built Environment): Bob Bradfield, Alex Dixon, Alex Holstein, Bridget Kane, and Chris Preis. Alex Dixon and Chris Preis were awarded a Chancellor’s Undergraduate Teaching Fellowship for their work in this class.
Alex Dixon received funding from the honors college to pursue a B.Phil. degree, finishing his research on the new Potsdamer Platz under the direction of Gretchen Bender. He will travel to Berlin in February to conduct site analysis.
Many architectural studies majors engaged in exciting projects last summer. Jenna Daniels was accepted into the Fountainblue Architecture Program in France and three architectural studies majors were accepted into the DIS program at Copenhagen: Bridget Kane (who will study sustainable development and architecture while abroad), Chris Moy and Jovanni Carter-Davis.
Bridget Kane was awarded the first annual Fil Hearn award to help defray her expenses this summer while traveling abroad. Slightly closer to home, Alex Dixon was accepted into the intensive summer workshop, internship and volunteer program at Arcosanti in Arizona, an experimental town in the desert, built to embody Paolo Soleri's concept of arcology - the fusion of architecture with ecology. And in our own backyard, Ashley Greene served as an intern for the Historic Hill Initiative, working on the project team that seeks to restore the childhood home of the famous playwright August Wilson and develop an artist colony in Pittsburgh’s Hill District.
