Neighborhood Research
The design process examined in the 
Architectural Design Studio is concerned with context as a potential driver for architectural design and examines the relationship between building and the urban fabric in which it is situated. Students investigate Pittsburgh's Hazelwood neighborhood, analyzing historic, geographic, demographic, economic, and sociological aspects. This contextual research leads to contextual mapping as a design tool.
Under the direction of instructors Jozef Petrak and Utkarsh Ghildyal, students like Justin Greenawalt (BAA 2008) eventually use folding design techniques to come up with revitalization solutions for Hazelwood. Read Justin's account of the experience in an archived newsletter article.
