South Oakland

The Built Environment

Through a series of units dealing with South Oakland
different architectural issues and building types (Representation; Landscape; Dwelling; Commerce and Industry; Public Institutions; Sacred Spaces), students in HAA 0940 Approaches to the Built Environment are introduced to ideas and problems that affect the way in which the built environment has been and continues to be shaped in a variety of historical and cultural contexts.

Students delve into the South Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, using this local site to serve as a case-study for the analysis of different aspects of the built environment.
