Minor in Architecture-Design

The Minor in Architecture – Design is available to any undergraduate enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh who wishes to develop both their understanding of design thinking and their making skills. The minor is an opportunity to obtain experience and understanding of various aspects of the architectural profession and is especially relevant to those working in many aspects of civil engineering.

The minor is administered through the architectural studies program in the Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences. Civil and environmental engineering students wishing to pursue the Minor in Architecture – Design are advised to contact Dr. Kent Harries or Dr. Leonard Casson before enrolling in courses.

[1] Required Courses | 18 credits

  • ARC 0110 | Approaches to the Built Environment | 3 cr | offered in both the fall and spring terms
  • ARC 0116 | Global Architecture 2: Modern | 3 cr | or another course in architectural history and ideas from the list below [3].
  • ARC 0201 | Foundation Studio | 6 cr | offered in the fall and spring terms; student must receive a C or better to qualify for ARC 1201
  • ARC 1201 | Design Studio 1 | 6 cr | offered in the spring term only

  • ARC 1911 | Architecture + Digital Media 1 | 3 cr | offered in fall term only; waived for students who have taken a course in AutoCAD in high school or CEE 109 | Computer Methods in Civil Engineering.
  • SA 0130 | Foundation Drawing | 3 cr | waived for students who have taken art courses in high school.
